Before You Trade
A short primer on how investors think about picking stocks, and how the PSX actually works day-to-day.
Ways of Choosing a Stock
Fundamental analysis asks what a company is actually worth — its earnings, debt, dividend history, and industry position — and compares that to its share price. It's the lens behind this page's Buy/Hold/Sell seals: a rate cut, an earnings report, or a debt settlement changes what a company is worth.
Technical analysis instead studies price and volume charts, looking for patterns to time entries and exits, largely ignoring the "why." Many PSX trading desks blend both: fundamentals to choose what to own, technicals to help decide when.
Buying companies that appear cheap relative to their earnings or assets (a low P/E ratio, for instance), on the belief the market has temporarily mispriced them. Classic value names on the PSX tend to sit in banking, energy, and cement.
Paying a premium for companies expected to grow earnings quickly — often technology or consumer names — on the bet that future profits justify today's higher price. It usually carries more volatility.
Favouring stocks that pay a steady, meaningful dividend — common among Pakistan's banks, fertiliser makers, and E&P companies. This approach prioritises cash income and stability over rapid price appreciation.
Buying what's already rising and selling what's already falling, on the idea that trends tend to persist over the short term. Faster, more hands-on, and generally higher-risk for beginners than the approaches above.
Every stock card also carries one of four horizon tags, computed the same transparent way as the Buy/Hold/Sell seal: Day/Quick means a big price move today plus a strong news catalyst — high-conviction but often short-lived. Swing/Occasional means a clear but more moderate signal worth watching over days or weeks. Long-Term/Dividend flags steady, high-yield payers where the case is about holding for income rather than today's move. Watch means nothing decisive either way right now.
This is a categorisation of today's data, not a prediction — always cross-check before acting on it.
Managing Risk
Spreading capital across sectors so that one bad earnings season or one legal dispute doesn't sink your whole portfolio. A common rule of thumb is to avoid letting any single stock become an outsized share of your total holdings.
Money you'll need within a year or two generally has no business in individual stocks — the PSX can and does swing several percent in a single session. Longer horizons give a portfolio more room to recover from downturns.
Chasing a stock after it has already surged, or selling in a panic during a dip, is how most retail investors underperform the market. A written plan helps take emotion out of the decision.
How the PSX Actually Works
All PSX trading runs through SECP-licensed brokerage firms (TREC holders). Opening an account typically means a Standardised Account Opening Form, a CNIC, and a linked bank account — most brokers now handle this digitally within a few working days.
The Central Depository Company (CDC) electronically holds every investor's shares — not the broker. If your brokerage ever shuts down, your holdings stay safe and can be moved to another broker.
When you buy or sell, the trade executes immediately, but the shares and cash only formally change hands two business days later, cleared through NCCPL. This is why this page's buy/sell modal talks about an intended purchase or sale.
Individual stocks are generally halted for the day once they move roughly 7.5% (or one rupee, whichever is greater) from the previous close, in either direction.
The KSE-100 tracks the 100 largest companies by market value across the whole exchange. The KMI-30 tracks the 30 largest Shariah-compliant companies — the standard benchmark for Islamic investors on the PSX.
Capital Gains Tax on PSX shares runs roughly 15% for active tax filers and 20% for non-filers, alongside brokerage commission on every trade. Rates do change — always confirm the current rate with your broker or a tax advisor.
Overseas Pakistanis can invest through a Roshan Digital Account, which links directly to CDC and allows settlement without needing to be physically present in Pakistan.
